Please be aware that this site is having a large update! If you are struggling to find something, please search for it, using the search bar!
Our Adopt an Activity Scheme gives dormant societies, sports clubs, volunteering projects, and media groups a second chance to run. If a student group is unable to secure a committee for the next academic year, it becomes available for ‘adoption’. That means you can take on the group and give it a new lease of life.
Each group needs three signatories in order to be ‘adopted’:
a President
a Secretary
a Treasurer
While you need three people to ‘adopt' the activity straight away, you can get in touch as an individual, and we'll hold on to your student email address for the duration of the academic year. If enough people express interest in adopting the group, we can put you in contact with each other so that you can lead the group together.
To get started, you need to email societies@yorksu.org for any queries to begin with. We’ll get back to you with the next steps that you will need to take to formally ratify the group. This will include completing some forms and mandatory training.
You can see a list of all societies which are up for adoption on the Adopt an Activity page of the York SU website.
An adopted activity cannot change:
its core purpose,
its name,
its key affiliations
in its first year.
It must continue in its existing and historic form. Alternative procedures are available to set up a new activity.
If you have any questions about adopting any of our groups, please contact societies@yorksu.org.
