Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Resources

Would you like to make your group more accessible and inclusive, but aren't sure how?

Below we have a range of resources developed by York SU staff, outlining best practices and things to consider when planning activity for your student group!

Accessibility

Student group constitutions require your group to be accessible and inclusive to all.

We have created an Accessibility Guide to help you ensure your student events are as accessible as possible. This guide includes a checklist for digital and in person event planning, resources for further information, a glossary of accessibility related terminology and tips for all aspects of planning your event. You do not need to read through the whole document in one sitting but can dip in and out of it to find the information you need to make your event welcoming and inclusive.

We also have the Accessibility Checklist in a handy quick sheet format so you can refer back to it whenever you are planning an event.

If you have any questions, please contact your link staff member.

Cultural Competency

We have created a Cultural Competency Guide to help answer questions you have around different aspects of identity. Through this guide, you can learn some historical context, think about language and inclusive communication, and start to become better equipped to navigate the world with cultural competence. You do not need to read the whole document in one sitting but can use the tabs to find resources, background information, a glossary of cultural competency and EDI terms and key dates about calendar events for different members of our community at York.

We have also created a Cultural Competency Resources Sheet which has links to different short form media to help improve your knowledge around different identity issues. Whether you prefer YouTube videos, Podcasts or Blogs, or want signposting to York SU contacts, this doc will have something for you.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Events

The Celebrating Diversity Events Series is overseen by the University’s Diversity Events and Celebrations Working Group (DECWG), a group that meets on a termly basis in order to discuss upcoming events and to take a joined up approach in promoting University activities.

Membership of this group is broad and includes representatives from York SU, the Equality and Diversity Office, the Events Team, Communications and the Centre for Applied Human Rights.

If you would like to contribute an event or activity to the Celebrating diversity events series or have an idea for a guest speaker, get in touch with your link staff member in the first instance.

Submitting an event to the series means that the University can help you promote your event to as diverse an audience as possible and connect it to other related events and activities taking place across the University. For an example, see their Black History Month 2022 webpage.

York SU Digital Accessibility Framework

The Digital Accessibility Resource Hub has an introduction to digital accessibility and why it matters, as well as resources that outline how to make your documents and communications more accessible.
