Having your project ratified by York SU will give you training and funding opportunities, access to resources, and support from your Union staff. If you've got a project idea, find out more about the criteria and how you can submit an application to ratify your volunteering project. If you have any questions throughout the process, get in touch with the Volunteering Team at volunteering@yorksu.org
A York SU Volunteering Project is a student-led, student-run project that involves a group of volunteers who share a common interest and passion; they get together to do something about it for the good of the community and for the volunteers’ own development. Current projects can be found on the York SU Website.
Volunteering projects differ from societies as:
Societies primary aim should not be to charitably fundraise or volunteer, whereas, this should be the primary aim for ratified volunteering projects.
Volunteering projects must demonstrate a benefit to the community, whereas societies must only demonstrate a benefit to the student body.
If you think your group may be better suited as a York SU Society, you can view the Guide to Starting a New Society.
You can run your student group without being ratified by York SU. Ratification comes with a host of benefits, but we will ask things of you in return. There will be documents you need to fill out; meetings you need to attend; and minimum standards you must fulfil in order to continue.
Before you start the ratification process, think carefully about whether becoming a York SU-ratified project is the right option for your student group, or if it’s best to run it your own way.
If you've decided ratification is right for you, you need to complete the Application Form, keeping in mind the specific criteria you'll need to meet. Alongside some application questions explaining what your group will do and the impact it will have, you will also be asked some questions about your groups compliance with the Table of Requirements.
Once you've considered whether your group meets the criteria in the Table of Requirements, you can then submit your application for consideration by Volunteering Committee. You can also view the full process flowchart below.
If you have questions throughout the application process, or before submitting your application, please contact the York SU Volunteering Team at volunteering@yorksu.org
