Who are the Societies Committee?
All York SU societies are represented by the Societies Committee. The Committee votes on new society applications, decides grant allocations, and feeds back to York SU on any issues societies are facing. A medical societies representative, elected internally by the Medical Society, also sits on the committee to help ratify HYMS societies. York SU's Activities Development Coordinator supports the Committee's work and takes minutes of meetings.
Societies Committee is chaired by the Activities Officer and consists of one elected representative for each society category:
Academic & Educational Societies Rep: James Hensman
Arts & Cultural Societies Rep: Vacant
Campaigning & Political Societies Rep: Leonor Gato
Faith Societies Rep: Vacant
Games & Fandom Societies Rep: James Metcalf
International Societies Rep: Nick Hayes
Medical Societies Rep: Ollie Crossland (MedSoc)
Music & Performance Societies Rep: Wilf Tomlinson
Special Interest Societies Rep: Vacant
Reps will:
Represent the views of their societies to the Student Activities Officer and the Societies Committee.
Represent specific societies in their category in decision-making processes, including approving grant applications and ratifying new societies.
Mentor new societies in their category.
Be a point of contact for societies within their category via. their rep email.
Attend three Societies Committee meetings per semester.
Seek opportunities for collaboration between societies in their category.
Collect feedback (positive and negative!) from all of societies within their category; ideally this will take the form of a meeting with committee members from all societies within that category.
Convey information to all societies in their category as directed.
Suggest opportunities for societies to promote themselves to new members.
Societies Committee meets every three weeks and its minutes are available online.
Nomination Rules
You don't have to be a member of committee to run as a rep for our Societies Committee. The only thing that we ask that you have is a membership to the society category you are wanting to represent.
For example:
A student who is a member of SwiftSoc could run as a Games and Fandom Rep, because the Taylor Swift Society are part a Games and Fandom Society. This student however would not be eligible to run for a Campaigning and Political Rep, unless they are also a member of a Campaigning and Political Society (such as Amnesty).
A student who is a member of Engineering Society and Catholic Society are eligible to run to be a rep for Academic and Educational Societies or Faith Societies.
Before nominating yourself, be sure to:
Check your memberships. What groups are you a member of? You can find this out by logging into your member dashboard at yorksu.org.
Check what categories the groups that you are a member of are in, using our Societies A-Z filter to search your group's page on yorksu.org.
Fill out our nomination form. You don't have to be on committee to nominate yourself, just as long as you have a membership for that particular category! Explain why you would make a great rep, what society experience you have and other relevant information!
