The Societies Committee is comprised of appointed voluntary representatives for each category of society, including:
Music and Performance
Arts and Cultural
Special Interest
Games and Fandom
International
Faith
Academic and Educational
Campaigning and Political
HYMS (including sub-societies)
Every three weeks during semesters 1 and 2 (and once during the summer vacation for York SU Annual Grant allocations), the Societies Committee meets to discuss any concerns regarding their category of society. You can read any minutes from previous Societies Committee meetings online.
The Societies Committee also meets to review any new society applications, grant applications, and discusses key events such as the Activities Awards with the Activities Development Coordinator and the Activities Officer.
The Societies Committee representatives are there as a point of contact for societies within their category, to signpost issues accordingly and to raise any issues with the Activities Officer and Activities Development Coordinator.
To attend Societies Committee meetings that are chaired by the Activities Officer;
Vote upon the ratification of new societies;
Review new society grants, contingency grants and the York SU Annual Grant;
To handle queries on their York SU representative email, escalating to the Activities Development Coordinator or the Activities Officer where relevant;
To maintain a social media presence using the York SU representative Instagram;
To work with the Activities Officer for the development and enrichment of their society category.
You must be a student who is currently studying at the University of York;
You must be a registered member of a society within the category of which you are applying to represent.
For example, if you are only a member of Swift Society, you can only apply to be a part of a Games and Fandom Society.
Time management skills: the ability to balance voluntary commitments with a degree and extracurricular duties;
Communication skills: the ability to communicate professionally to other societies, Sabbatical Officers, and members of York SU.
Basic IT skills: the ability to use Google Drive, including Gmail, Google Docs and Google Calendar.
Working within a democratically-led organisation, informing policy and central change within the SU;
Working with a variety of stakeholders, including York SU staff, elected Sabbatical Officers, and students;
Development of communication and leadership skills.
Applications are open from 09:00 on the 15 September and close at 17:00 on the 26 September.
