The Sustainability Badge is a structured way to help your student group operate more sustainably, and celebrate the success of your work on sustainability. Getting the badge gives you access to exclusive promotional opportunities for your student group to help you get more members and ensure you have the recognition you deserve for your hard work on sustainability!
Applications for the badge are open during the summer and winter vacation periods.
Applications open: 1st August 2025
Applications close: 31st August 2025
Once your pledge has been reviewed and approved, you’ll get the greenlight to upload it onto your student group page.
Your group will then receive:
Receive an official badge on your student group webpage that will allow students to differentiate your group from others.
A set of social media graphics to announce and celebrate your achievement, making it easy to share your success.
Promotion of your group's achievements through York SU's communications channels.
A spotlight at Welcome Fair to help you reach new members and celebrate your sustainability badge.
Access to two 15 minute meetings with the Union Development Officer and the Sustainability Coordinator during the academic year to support you with your sustainability plans.
Even small changes—like influencing suppliers, reducing single-use plastic, or cutting transport emissions—drive significant positive change. You'll inspire others, creating a ripple effect for a more sustainable future.
In a sea of student groups, this is your badge of honor! It clearly signals your commitment to sustainability, attracting environmentally conscious students and showcasing your group's values.
Getting your group's Sustainability badge could be an excellent way to create a legacy within your group. By embedding sustainability into your group's ethos, you'll create a positive and enduring impact for future members.
By participating, you'll gain and demonstrate highly sought-after skills such as the ability to create impact and drive change.
The work you do will be great to showcase on your CV and in job interviews.
This can be any member of the committee, or you can create a new position on your committee. This person will champion your sustainability pledges and ensure they are put into action and regularly reviewed.
This focused training provides the essential knowledge and tools for success. At the end of the training module don't forget to submit the Google Form registering your evidence of completion - this is needed to confirm your badge!
Using what you've learnt in the training, it's time to come up with your sustainability pledge! This pledge will be listed on your student group page, and when you come to renew your Badge next year you will be asked to show how you have fulfilled the pledge.
Examples of pledges your group could make:
We pledge to remove single use plastic from our student group activities.
We pledge to avoid using Amazon where possible, and where it is unavoidable utilise the collection lockers and reduced packaging options.
We pledge to transition our student group travel away from car travel, the first phase of this involves implementing a system in which train and coach options will be booked as a first choice of travel and car travel as a last resort.
We pledge to deliver two sustainability-focused volunteering events for our group members every year, this will involve engaging with local organisations to offer our services and contribute to broader sustainability work in York.
If you are interested in making a pledge that relates to things your group buys, have a read of our Sustainable Procurement Guide.
You submit your pledge via the Sustainability Badge application form. The Union Development Officer and the Sustainability Coordinator review the applications on a rolling basis throughout the application windows.
Your badge lasts 12 months and must be renewed annually if you wish to continue to use the badge and benefits.
If your Sustainability Lead steps down, elect a new lead who then completes the required training.
You will need to report on your progress against the pledge annually. The pledge can be updated if you have met your target and want to set a new goal, or you can keep the pledge on a rolling basis.
